New York Movies book

cover of close-ups new york movies by mark asch

My book, New York Movies, was published in spring 2019, by HarperCollins UK. It was part of series of “Close-Ups” movie books conceived by the London-based film publication Little White Lies, alongside Vampire Movies, by Charles Bramesco, and Wes Anderson, by Sophie Monks Kaufman.

The book is an illustrated pocket-sized guide to New York City on film, exploring the many overlapping social histories — of politics and policy, culture and subculture, film production and exhibition — that have shaped the depiction of the city on screen across the boroughs and decades. A chapter on The Window (1949) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) was excerpted on Flavorwire and can still be read there.

The cover illustration is by Chris Delorenzo. The interior illustrations are by Laurène Boglio.
